Considering that there are millions of Internet users across the country, several thousand losing access isn’t a big deal — unless you are one of them.
In the Rochester area, computer experts said that they were hearing from concerned users but that the malware issue didn’t appear too serious.
“We sent people out to a local business that told us that an Internet outage could cost them as much as $50,000 or $100,000 an hour in lost business,” said Andre Leite Alves, manager at Aware Bear Computers on Monroe Avenue in Pittsford. He said Aware Bear had taken at least eight calls on Monday from users worried about the impact on their Internet access.
“We’ve been directing them to the website, which will tell them if they’re infected.” Andre Leite Alves said. “They’re concerned. These are people who rely on Internet access for their email, for all kinds of things.”
